Habitat volunteer question
Volunteering with the idea of securing a Job.= wrong motive!
Hi Linda.
You are touching an issue here that does not actually help volunteerism in SA. Why?
Some public sector agencies used volunteers for cheap labor, and give them the carrot of a possibility to secure a job after say 2 years of volunteerism, e.g. the police community forums.
This promise was honored in some cases but brought with it, what you experience namely to do volunteerism to secure a job, doest matter where you volunteer.. even places like Habitat. This wrong unspoken motive creates more problems than solving some.
I believe this is not beneficial for most non profits where any form of volunteerism is now seen as to be a paid job after a while.
Yes it is true that it help the 50% jobless to focus their energy to some good causes, but this perception create expectations that certainly cannot be met by the majority of non profits. Can you imagine with the Aids pandemy what an difficult situation it creates where everyone must help but there are not money to pay salaries etc.
Therefore some volunteers would go as far as use their savings money to do volunteering with the hope of getting a salary in a month or two.
To make it even worse my experience in SA is that the few foundations that give money, do it towards equipment, buildings or projects and stipulate clearly, that their money is NOT to be used for salaries, or stipends.
Thanks for pointing out that this HUGE gap between the Real need on the one hand and then the huge labor force that want to help on the other hand. This gap need to be manage by managing the expectations and that asks for a lot of skill, marketing and publicity.
Hope that you can come with some creative solutions that works here.
Hey and thanks for coming out here to help us build home in Africa!!
